Underfloor heating

When we install new flooring it gives the opportunity to have electric underfloor heating installed at the same time. Underfloor heating can help keep floors and rooms warm and offer a space-saving alternative to radiators.

There are two main types of underfloor heating: electric underfloor heating, which is also known as a dry system, and water underfloor heating, also called a wet system. InVision Interiors supply and install electric dry systems. Because electric systems are generally quite thin and straightforward to fit, they can be easier and less hassle to install in an existing room than a wet heating system, which requires some space for pipework and could involve the floor being raised.

There’s an electric underfloor heating system for most flooring types. The system will depend on the size of the room and how well insulated it is, what the flooring below it is like, whether it is insulated and the type of flooring that will be installed on top. Options include loose cable systems, cable mats to cover larger areas and carbon heating film – the perfect solution for heating wood or laminate floors.


By far our most popular system in bathrooms, for it’s flexibility in covering any shape and size of room. The systemt comes as one length of cable which is layed out and run into any shaped room or area. Cable kits can be used in any room, no matter how irregular the shape.

he Mat system is similar to the Cable system, except that the cable comes already taped to a 50cm wide fibreglass mesh.The main advantage with this design being that makes it much faster to lay out in larger ‘open plan’ areas when compared to the cable system.The standard system has an output of 150w per sqm, suitable for all internal rooms. With the Mat 200 system the output has been increased to 200 w per sqm making them ideal for use in conservatories and other areas of high heat loss.

Our carbon heating film is ideally suited for installation beneath wood or laminate floors. At less than half a millimetre thick , it has a negligible effect on floor height. The film is laid over our exceptional 6mm Depron floor insulation (which replaces the standard flooring underlay) to give a minimal effect on your floor height – less than 6.5mm! This makes it ideal for use in both new buildings and renovations or refurbishments where floor height can be vitally important!

Our 20w per linear metre in-screed cable is designed to be installed in a concrete screed (usually 60-100mm). The system is a primary heat source and can be used under almost any floor covering.The output is varied by the cable spacing and usually ranges from 120-150w per sqm in a new build or extension, up to 200w per sqm in a conservatory, or where an ‘off-peak’ solution is required.

Our systems are designed so that the floor surface will feel comfortably warm , but will never get too hot to walk on! The thermostat regulates the floor temperature by turning the system off when the floor gets to the required temperature, then back on as the floor begins to cool – thus keeping a constant temperature. It does this up to 3 times per minute for optimum control and maximum energy efficiency.

In the vast majority of cases the answer will be yes, especially in new, well-insulated properties. The exceptions being old properties with little or no insulation, where you have limited floor space available, such as a small galley kitchen, or a small bathroom in which case it may be physically impossible to get enough heat output into a small confined space.

Yes it can – The thermostat controller allows the user full control of the heating system, including the ‘occupied’ temperature, the ‘unoccupied’ temperature and the times of operation using a 7-day/24 hr clock control.

Yes all cables are backed by a manufacturers lifetime guarantee! The thermostat is guaranteed for five years from date of purchase.

The running costs are determined by many different factors so it is difficult to generalise. However in most cases the running costs should not be a negative factor, especially in new homes, apartments and conservatories with insulated floors.

When the systems are used in a well-insulated building (in line with current building regulations) the running costs are usually very low, the thermostatic control in each room/zone means that you only use just enough energy to maintain your desired room temperature. Based on the default thermostat settings, a 1kw system will cost approximately £0.40 a day, based on an average house with an average level of insulation.

The time electric underfloor heating would be considered ‘expensive’ to run is when it is installed as a heating system in a poorly insulted home, with little or no floor insulation. Our advice for such situations is always therefore to spend that little bit extra on insulation and you will enjoy the benefits of cheaper heating bills for many years to come!
